Custom Rocker Switch Seal

At first glance this silicone rocker switch seal looks like one of our many standard rocker boots intended to protect electromechanical rocker switches. However, this new custom boot’s dome is contoured to match and install on a Firestone Electric-Pressure Switch #9039 used in conjunction with Firestone’s  Air Spring  & Leveling Systems. These systems are well known for their use in a wide range of automotive applications.  Unlike typical bus, truck and RV applications,  there are certain all season recreational vehicle applications that require switch protection against extreme harsh environments — including pressure washing. In this instance, the controls are mounted on the chassis. For maximum protection, this boot design features a mounting flange with four screw holes for mounting to a metal frame (comparable to our circuit breaker sealing boot flange design). Design specifications include an operational life of 50,000 min. actuations, temperature range of -80°F to +400°F (-62°C to +204°C). The seal is molded in 50 durometer transparent silicone rubber (polymer type ASTM D 1418) to resist salt spray, sun light, ozone, water, ice, dust, dirt, fungus, and most acids and lubricating oils. This boot (like most APM boots) is UL recognized and ingress rated at IP54. Electric-Pressure switch sealing demands for harsh environments are becoming more prevalent, and many of APM’s standard and custom solutions can easily satisfy them.

BETTER FASTENING SEALING & LOCKING WITHOUT CHEMISTRY

The tide is changing. Each day, more engineers are discovering the environmental benefits of the dry, embedded O-Ring  fastening method over the wet liquid sealing & locking method. Unlike liquid chemicals, APM’s one-step embedded self-sealing method produces no undesirable fumes, no environmental hazard disposal problems, no warning labels, no primer or curing time required; just insert, torque and it’s done.  No special installation training is necessary and fastener-removal is as simple  as  installation. APM pre-assembled, stainless steel self-sealing fasteners are reusable and always provide reliable 360° metal-to-metal contact and are available with several locking options. These self-sealing screws, bolts, nuts, washers and rivets are tested to UL standard 50, types 1-13. Capable of sealing liquids and gases to 20,000psi/vacuum internal/external. Operates in temperatures of -160°F to +500°F (-106°C to 260°C). Silicone rubber is standard, and is resistant to salt water, weather, dirt, dust, sunlight, ozone and most acids. Select from a wide range of O-Ring elastomeric materials for optimum operation depending on application. For more than half a century, APM products have been “green” and installation friendly.

Silihromes Shed Light On Incandescent Lamps
SilikromesYes, not all miniature incandescent lamps have been replaced by LEDs. Many OEMs still find an incandescent lamp solution preferable for certain commercial and military applications. And, to provide them with the color transmission that is often required, they choose APM’s SILIKROME® color lamp filters. They are molded in silicone rubber in choices of two temperature ranges, and easily fit onto T-1,   T-1 ¾, T-2, T-3 ¼, T-3 ¾, G-3 ½, T-5, S-6, and  S-8 lamps. They will remain color fast and compliant even after 10,000 hours of operation. And they are strong enough to contain broken glass in the event of shattering. Unlike painted lamps, SILIKROMES will not chip or fade. Typical applications include instrument lighting, lighted push button switches, decorative lighting, and dashboard illumination. Standard colors are red, white, blue and correcting blue, yellow, and green.

TRIGGER PIMPROVES BOOTED BREAKER OPERATION

THIS TRIGGER PREVENTS BAD THINGS FROM HAPPENING ON SELECT CIRCUIT BREAKERSAPM’s boots not only protect one, two and three pole circuit breakers from environmental attack, but also can lend a hand in making it easier to reset and turn on the circuit breaker. To achieve the necessary muscle (leverage) to get the job done right, APM designed their “Trigger” arm, strategically located inside the silicone rubber seal’s canopy (dome). As a result, the user can now easily and positively reset and turn on the breaker and has the confidence of knowing that a positive reset positioning event has occurred. This important patented feature is available on a number of APM standard sealing boots (see CT & HT Series) — matched to many of the most popular breaker manufacturer models. The “Trigger” feature is also available on custom design configurations.

EXTREME COLD TEMPERATURE CUSTOM PUSHBUTTON BOOT
bootTo achieve the desired switch seal elastomeric flexibility that is necessary for reliable operation for a specific Siemens pushbutton switch operating in temperatures  down to -40°C (to +70°C) — an equipment fabricator came to APM for a custom solution that would satisfy this harsh environmental temperature requirement. The result was a special two piece sealing boot system, fabricated in clear silicone rubber with a separate adaptor-nut (1 11/64”) thread size. The boot is friction-mounted to the adaptor — a departure from our standard line of pushbutton switch boots which are bonded to a hex mounting-nut. This is just one of numerous custom solutions, employing either a hybrid  design based on an existing APM seal, or a completely new  solution.
